Terpenes

Terpenes are the aromatic compounds behind a cultivar's smell and, plausibly, part of how it feels. The aroma chemistry is settled. The effect evidence mostly is not, and every card says which.

What the evidence tags mean

  • Studied in people. At least one human study has looked at one effect, which does not mean the effect is proven or that it applies to cannabis products at the amounts you would use.
  • Studied in the lab or in animals. The findings come from animals or test tubes, so they suggest a direction worth studying but do not tell you what will happen in a person.
  • Traditional use only. The compound has a long history in herbal medicine but little modern research, so any effect claim rests on tradition rather than measurement.

Animal studies have looked at sedation and muscle relaxation. Myrcene is the most common terpene in modern cultivars, and the varieties patients describe as heavy or couch-locking tend to be the myrcene-rich ones.

When a product leaves you sleepier than you planned, check the myrcene number on the lab sheet before anything else.

Animal models show mood-lifting and anti-anxiety signals, and a few small human aromatherapy studies point the same way. It has also been studied for acid reflux, which is not much help to a cannabis patient.

At the counter

Two products at the same THC number can feel very different, and the rest of the profile is often the reason. Patients tend to describe limonene-forward products as brighter.

This is the only terpene shown to bind a cannabinoid receptor directly, CB2, the receptor concentrated in immune tissue. Animal work on inflammation and pain has been consistent enough that it is the most pharmacologically interesting compound on this page.

At the counter

If pain or inflammation is the goal and two lab sheets otherwise look alike, the caryophyllene number is a reasonable tiebreaker.

Older human work looked at opening the airways. In animal studies, the short-term memory interference caused by THC looks smaller when pinene is present.

The folk claim that piney varieties leave the head clearer points the same direction as the animal data. That is as far as an honest sentence can go.

Calming and sedative effects, with a longer research trail than most terpenes because lavender itself has been through small human anxiety trials.

If evening anxiety is the problem you are trying to solve, this is the terpene to look for on the lab sheet.

Terpinolenesay tur-PIN-oh-leen

Rodent work finds it mildly sedating, even though in cannabis it is known for showing up in energetic daytime varieties. The literature and the folklore genuinely disagree on this one.

A good reminder that the whole profile matters more than any single terpene: terpinolene-dominant cultivars are usually high in THC and low in myrcene as well.

Animal models show anti-inflammatory activity and appetite suppression, the reverse of the appetite push most cannabis produces.

Treat it as an aroma note. If a budtender credits an effect to ocimene in particular, be skeptical.
